The North-East won the senior men's trophy in Sunday's North of England Inter Counties Championships at Cudworth.

Gateshead Harrier Kieron Flannery, the North-East champion, won the 400m hurdles in 56.68 secs, John Stacey took the pole vault gold (3.30m) and Chris Jefferson won the triple jump (13.76m).

Newly-crowned AAA high jump champion Philip Collins led the North-East to the under-15 boys' title with a leap of 1.88 - 18 centimetres higher than his nearest rival - while Stephen Reynolds won the javelin, throwing 43.53m.

The region had three individual winners in the under-17 men, with Chester-le-Street's Damon Ellis first in the 400m (52.22 secs), Middlesbrough's Jonathan Taylor gaining maximum points in the 1500m (4:06.58) and Dean Barratt winning the hammer with a throw of 39.90m.

The North-East were runners-up to Yorkshire in the senior women's section, with Jarrow and Hebburn's North-East and Northern champion Stacey Mohammed winning the javelin with a throw of 39.91m and Leah Weatherill first in the shot (11.24m). Middlesbrough and Cleveland's Johanna Jackson won the 5000m walk in 24 mins 43.68 secs.

* Redcar-based Stephen Hepples, who competes in the British Athletics League for Newham and Essex Beagles, won yesterday's Great Scottish Run 10 in Glasgow for the second year in succession in a time of 30 mins 45 secs.
