The youth who died in a weekend tragedy at a renowned beauty spot has now been formally identified as 17-year-old Darren Ian Dey.

The teenager, who lived in Coulson Close, Yarm, died on Sunday after getting into difficulties while swimming in the Cod Beck reservoir at Osmotherley, near Northallerton.

The alarm was raised shortly before 2pm but it was some seven hours later before police divers were able to recover his body.

Swimming is banned at the reservoir, which is owned and operated by Yorkshire Water, but the site is still hugely popular with trippers and campers.

Water chiefs and police have now repeated their warnings about the dangers of swimming in such waters.
