A PROJECT to create a town square for Hartlepool's Headland has taken another step forward.
Four urban design firms have been chosen to take part in a competition to redesign the area in front of the Borough Buildings between Middlegate, the promenade, St Hilda's Church and Northgate.
Studies have identified a strong need to improve that area, to create an environment befitting the centre of the Headland.
The project is being spearheaded by the North Hartlepool Partnership, which is using money from regional development agency One NorthEast's Single Regeneration Budget to revitalise the Headland.
The design firms were selected from a shortlist of ten by members of the project steering group, which includes the North Hartlepool Partnership, the Headland Parish Council, Hartlepool Council and One NorthEast.
They are: Fergusson McLlveen, which has an office in Middlesbrough; Kent firm Rummey Design Associates; Gillespies, which has headquarters in Glasgow; and West 8, a Dutch company based in Rotterdam.
The firms have until mid October to submit their design proposals.
The four designs will then be examined by the project steering group and will be put on public display to enable Headland residents to give their views.
The winning design will then be chosen. Work is expected to start early in the New Year.
