BUSINESSES in the region are being encouraged to take advantage of Lithuania's entry into the EU to establish commercial ties with the country. British Ambassador to Lithuania Colin Roberts visited the North-East to meet businesses and officials who are working to make the most of opportunities in the Eastern European state. During his three-day stay in the region, Mr Roberts toured several companies and met delegates from the Environmental Industries Federation and the North East Chamber of Commerce. Lithuania has the fastest-growing economy in Europe and offers a gateway into other neighbouring markets, including Russia.

Coal comfort: UK Coal promised to improve its performance yesterday after production problems left it with half-year losses of £5.8m. The UK's biggest mining operator failed to take advantage of rising prices during the six months to June 30 as seven coalface changes - where equipment is moved to a new location - disrupted output levels at deep mines.

M&S launch: High street store Marks & Spencer is launching its latest clothing collections. The chain is introducing its autumn/winter collections for women, men and children, as well as lingerie, into branches across the country. The clothes are among the first to go into stores since the appointment of chief executive Stuart Rose.
