A COUNCIL that axed its main gardening event has paid almost £2,000 to support smaller shows.

Durham City Council is making grants of £160 to 12 gardening and craft shows.

One of the recipients is this weekend's inaugural Durham Horticultural and Craft Show at County Hall, the successor event to the council's own autumn produce show.

Fraser Reynolds, the cabinet member for the environment, said: "Supporting locally based horticultural or craft shows throughout the district, rather than organising one larger, city-based event, is a positive move that will revitalise such events, add to community spirit and encourage flourishing communities throughout the district.''
