A family is celebrating after two brothers became dads on the same day - with both babies weighing 6lbs 13oz.

Wayne Cleary's son Leighton was 11 days late and his brother Craig's daughter Abby was 11 days early.

Little Leighton was born at the University Hospital of North Durham in Durham City to Wayne, 22, and his wife Debbie, 20, at around 12.50am on Sunday morning.

And 20 miles away - just a few hours later - little Abby was born to Craig, 19, and his partner Tanya Murray, 20, at the University Hospital of Hartlepool.

Wayne, who has a 13-month-old daughter Tegan, said: "I was over the moon with Leighton being born and when I rang my mam and she said that Tanya had gone into labour and then we found out that she had had Abby.

"I couldn't believe it and I was even more shocked when they were the same weight as well. I would love to know what the odds were of something like this happening."

Wayne who lives in South Hetton, Tyne and Wear, added: "I am really looking forward to them sharing their first birthday and looking after each other." And surprised grandmother Denise Matthews, 40, of Peterlee, said: "It is great to have one grandchild but to have two in the same day is brilliant.

"We joked about what would happen if they both went into labour at the same time, because I wouldn't know which to go to see, but I couldn't believe it when they were both born on the same day."
