FARMERS will next week have the chance to view forage maize crops in Wensleydale as they rapidly approach readiness for harvest.

KW Alternative Feeds, in conjunction with Grainseed (Maize Ltd) and Metcalfe Farms, stage the event at Thorney Farm, Spennithorne, near Leyburn, on Wednesday at 11am.

"David, Brian and Philip Metcalfe have asked us to focus on only the very earliest varieties that should reach maturity on the trial site at 500," said Mr Allen.

"When I looked through the trial varieties on Thursday of last week there were big differences between them. I think this focused demonstration will give growers a good chance to assess real differences between the hybrids."

Neil Groom from Grainseed said that, in the sample taken from the trial site on Wednesday of last week, the dry matter was measured at 21.8pc, with early starch lay-down in the grains.

"I am expecting this to accelerate rapidly after the recent warm weather," he said. In spite of the wet summer, the maize was at the same level of maturity as it was on the same date last year, primarily because August temperatures were warm.

The trial plots were drilled on April 24 this year, a week earlier than normal according to Brian Metcalfe.

"We were able to prepare a good seedbed and the maize was through in a week and never looked back. I was worried we were too early and the seedlings would get frosted, but this year, maize drilled at this time had the best start," he said.

The open day includes tours of the different plots and expert talks and advice. Farmers wishing to attend should contact Steve Allen on 01969 622762.
