A MARKET town is preparing to welcome a representative from its US namesake.

Jill Emerson, from Richmond, Missouri, will arrive in Richmond, North Yorkshire, on Monday.

The ambassador will bring with her a letter of greeting from her mayor, plus an invitation for schoolchildren to take part in exchange visits to the US town.

During her visit, she will also hand over a banner from her town's Rotary club to its North Yorkshire counterpart.

Richmond Mayor Russell Lord said: "Richmond in North Yorkshire is the mother of all Richmonds.

"I think it is important to make contact and stay in contact with our friends across the world.

"It helps us strengthen bonds and build friendships."
