THE cost of putting their children through university is forcing a quarter of parents to delay their retirement, research showed yesterday.

A survey revealed more than 200,000 UK parents believed they would work an extra ten years to fund their child's education.

With the new university term about to start, the research, by savings company Prudential, showed the sacrifices parents were prepared to make to see their children through higher education.

According to the research, more than 250,000 parents took on more debt to pay for university. However, more than half half had no financial plans in place to cope with the extra cost.
