An appeal has been made for information relating to a series of incidents of missiles being thrown at buses.

Vehicles were targeted in east Durham villages over the weekend with one driver taken to hospital, as a precaution, when a rock was thrown at his bus as it made its way through Thornley.

The same Arriva 22 service is believed to have also come under fire in nearby Wingate earlier on Saturday night.

A police spokesman said there had been a "proliferation" of such incidents over the weekend, culminating in the driver receiving hospital treatment.

"It's got to stop, otherwise someone is going to get seriously injured," he added.

Anyone who witnessed any missiles being thrown at buses, specifically the incidents in Front Street, Wingate, at 10pm, and in Hartlepool Street, Thornley, at 11.40pm, is asked to ring Peterlee Police Office, on 0191-586 2621.
