Football fans who turned out in force for Middlesbrough's first venture into European cup competition have been praised by the police.

Over 100 officers were on patrol for the game against Banik Ostrava, including two officers from the visiting club's local force, and there was not a single arrest.

Chief Superintendent Mark Braithwaite described the atmosphere surrounding the cup tie as superb.

He said: "Both sets of fans were in good voice and on their best behaviour. It was reminiscent of Cardiff and the Carling Cup final.

"There were 32,000 fans including 400 away supporters, who flew back to Ostrava straight after the match. I can only describe the fans behaviour as tremendous.

"Colleagues from the Czech republic were impressed with the town, stadium, fans and the police operation.

"It was a good night for Middlesbrough and a fantastic start to the club's European competition."
