LOCAL food producers and retailers are being urged to join a powerful new alliance which is expected to put the Durham Dales on the map for good food, drink and crafts.

The Teesdale Marketing initiative, which is being planned under the Taste of Teesdale and Weardale umbrella, will last throughout 2005 and has the support of One NorthEast, and the national tourist board, VisitBritain.

Many producers and retailers have already been lined up by Taste of Teesdale and Weardale co-ordinator Hazel Coppack.

These include Elliott's Wholefoods and Zeta's of Barnard Castle; Cornforth and Cornforth of Middleton in Teesdale; Thorpe Farm at Greta Bridge; and the Old Weardale Tearoom at Stanhope, as well as craft and food producers throughout the two dales. Others can join by calling Ms Coppack on 01833 631870.

The campaign will involve the production of thousands of leaflets with a mini-directory of producers and retailers. These will be distributed to tourist offices, accommodation provi-ders and retail outlets. Hotels, guest houses, restaurants and schools will be lobbied to use local produce and a branding scheme will be introduced.

The campaign hits Eggleston Show tomorrow when people will be able to view the logo - with the wording Made in the Dale. Window stickers will also be produced.
