AN initiative to improve home safety will be launched next week.

Hambleton Community Safety Partnership has bought supplies of security devices, including spy hole viewers, door chains, window and shed alarms, while smoke alarms have been provided by North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service.

All the devices can be fitted through the handyperson service run by the Vale and Dale Home Improvement Agency.

The service provides residents with a worker for handyman jobs for £6 per half-hour.

Community safety officer Sergeant Matt France said: "This initiative will complement the well-established and respected Handyperson Service. It is targeted at improving home safety and security for the over-60s and any vulnerable adults on low incomes in our community.

"Vale and Dale already have established links with the professional and voluntary agencies in the district that work with the sections of the community we are trying to reach."

The handyperson service is available on (01969) 621900.
