A PILOT scheme will mean patients can get help from a physiotherapist without needing to visit their doctor first.

From Monday, patients over 18 who have a musculoskeletal problem and are registered with the Mowbray House and Mayford House surgeries, in Northallerton, can call a new physio helpline.

Caroline Hodgson, superintendent community physiotherapist with Hambleton and Richmondshire Primary Care Trust, said the physio direct scheme would mean a quicker service for patients.

"We already know from other physiotherapists working in different parts of the country that this system works well for everyone - users, doctors and physiotherapists themselves," she said.

"Our aim is to try to resolve people's problems quickly and effectively, and to help those with more difficult and long-standing problems cope more easily."

Musculoskeletal problems include joint or muscle/soft tissue injuries, such as a sprained ankle, back or neck pain or long-standing joint problems.

Those eligible can contact the service via a dedicated line into the physiotherapy department at the Friarage Hospital for initial assessment and advice.

An appointment for treatment can then be arranged.

The number is (01609) 763272 and will be available Monday to Friday from 8am to 11am. The initial call could last up to 20 minutes.

People can still choose to see their GP if they wish.

If successful, the service will be expanded to cover all of Hambleton and Richmondshire.
