TWO motorcycle enthusiasts will show off their latest labour of love at a classic bike show in Redcar this weekend.

Ernie Crust, from Nunthorpe, and Ted Hardwick, from Guisborough, have rebuilt a 500cc Norton using parts dating back to the Forties and Fifties. They will show off the machine at the 23rd Teesside Classic Bike Show at Redcar Leisure Centre on Sunday.

The pair reckon it took more than 2,000 man hours to get the bike into proper working order and were delighted when it passed its first test, competing in the recent Saltburn hill climb.

Mr Crust, secretary for the Saltburn climb, said: "The Norton isn't a showpiece, but it was built for a purpose. It's got very little chrome, but I'm proud of its performance."

He and Mr Hardwick are members of the Middlesbrough and District Motor Club, which celebrates its centenary next year.

They have invited top hill-climber John Woods, from Bradford, with his 930cc Westlake, to Sunday's show, which has been organised by Redcar and Cleveland Council events team.

It features prizes for best bike in show and best club stand, as well as categories for veteran and vintage up to 1930; post-vintage (1931-45); post-war (1945-65); competition up to 1972, vintage Japanese; specialist interest and emerging classics.

There are also classic and vintage club displays, auto jumble sales and club stands, plus big screen entertainment.

To enter, telephone 01287 639642 or for a club stand telephone 01642 471503. The event is from 10am-4.30 and admission is £3.50 for adults and £2 for juniors and pensioners.
