A fireworks hotline will be launched next Monday so residents can report anti-social behaviour in the run-up to Halloween and November 5.

The 24-hour freephone telephone hotline - (0800) 013 13 57 - will be launched by Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council and will be open until Sunday, November 7.

Operators will deal with information on people building bonfires, sale of illegal fireworks, misuse of fireworks and intelligence regarding illegal alcohol, cigarette and other age-restricted sales.

Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council's licensing and trading standards officers will be monitoring sales of fireworks and other age-restricted sales and cleansing teams will be directed to remove illegal and dangerous bonfires.

The multi-agency crackdown includes the council, Langbaurgh District Police, Cleveland Fire Brigade, Coast and Country Housing and other local housing providers.

The council's cabinet member for community safety, Councillor Joyce Benbow, said: "The telephone number is one part of a wider multi-agency initiative aimed at helping people to enjoy Bonfire Night in safety and reducing the risks posed by the misuse of fireworks and associated anti-social behaviour."

The council is supporting four organised displays across the borough on November 5.
