THE only playgroup in a market town is in danger of folding because of a financial crisis.

Brooklyn Playgroup, which meets at Brooklyn Community Centre, in Langton Road, Norton, is £1,000 in debt.

Committee members have now written to businesses in the area to ask for money to help wipe out the shortfall.

At a crisis meeting, the committee agreed to raise the rates and levy a charge for children aged over three whose places are paid for by the Government for the six weeks of the year when their funding is not covered by the education authority.

Committee social secretary Mary Rohan said: "It would be awful if it closed because it is the only affordable option - much cheaper than private nurseries - and it would also mean there would be nowhere for two-year-old toddlers to socialise. It is very important that they learn to interact with other children."

The committee, which is made up of parents, would be liable for the debt if the playgroup folds.

Carolyn Bird, service development manager for the education directorate at North Yorkshire County Council, said: "We are aware of the position of the pre-school and have been supporting them in their efforts to continue to provide for the children of Malton, Norton and surrounding area."

To raise funds, there will be a bingo night at the Railway Club, in Norton, on November 22, and a disco for toddlers to six-year-olds at Brooklyn Community Centre on December 3.
