CATERING students in Darlington are hoping for a cash boost to help them in their study of food.

Students and staff at Darlington College of Technology have been taking in apples to make into pies to sell on the college site.

The funds they raise will be used to pay for trips to catering venues around the region.

Tutor Clare Mitchell said: "We asked for windfall apples and have been overwhelmed by the response.

"The pastry kitchen is overflowing with them and we have been busy stewing them and baking pies.

"We will use the money for trips and the first will be to Betty's Tearooms to have a close look at the catering industry."

Head of catering Peter Bell said: "Apple pies are traditional English fare and the best flavour apples are the freshest. So to get so many locally grown and freshly fallen ones was just the thing."
