COUNCIL officials have released £1.7m to further a project aiming to boost transport in Darlington.
The borough council was allocated £3.2m by the Government to help Darlington become a "sustainable travel demonstration town".
It is intended is to invest the money in a series of schemes to make the town a role model for other areas.
Steps will be taken to reduce congestion, improve public transport and promote walking and cycle use.
A project director and school travel plan officer have already been appointed.
This week, the council's cabinet approved the release of £1,735,000 from the grant to take the scheme forward.
That money will be spent on cycle training for children and adults, pedestrian training for pupils, upgrading a key bus service, improving maintenance and extending a concessionary bus fares scheme to children aged 16 and under.
