Teesside Crown Court head how his mother, Lynne, and Mr Hawkins were trying to fix a television stand at his home when Patton stormed in and demanded to know what was going on.

There was a struggle before Patton left with his mother, and said: "I'm coming back later to kill you mate."

Shaun Dodds, prosecuting, said Patton's mother returned to Mr Hawkins' house after midnight with a friend. Patton entered the house and said he was going to kill Mr Hawkins before a fight broke out.

Mr Hawkins went to hospital and had stitches for a cut to his head.

John Gillette, mitigating, said Patton was concerned about his mother and he accepted that he went too far.

Mr Gillette said: "He went around to apologise for the common assault and his worst fears were realised when he saw his mother was there again."
