A workshop to discuss the problem of debt - and how people cope with it - is being held by senior members of North Yorkshire County Council.
They are taking a close look at debt in communities and how the actions of the authority and its partners impact on people.
The purpose is to hear from organisations, not just those that offer help and advice on debt counselling, practical services and financial education, but also those who encounter the effects debt can have on individuals and communities.
The Action on Debt workshop will be at the Galtres Centre, Easingwold, on Wednesday and has been designed to give the public a real opportunity to influence and have their say.
Scrutiny committee chairman Steve Shaw-Wright said: "As a county council, we need to have a greater understanding about the corrosive effects of debt in our communities.
"National reports show that helping local residents to overcome their money problems benefits both individuals and reduces the number of people who get into serious debt.
"The objective is to come up with a strategy to develop community-based finance initiatives which improve the advice and support for those who are disadvantaged through debt."
