EGGLESCLIFFE Parish Council is calling on residents to help block a planning application.

Stockton Borough Council will decide on an application by George Wimpey North-East Limited to demolish the Rookery and Sunnymount, in South View, Eaglescliffe, and replace them with houses and apartments.

Planning officers are recommending the scheme for approval with conditions at a meeting on Wednesday.

One of the conditions is that Wimpey will pay Egglescliffe Parish Council £14,000 for improvements to a local play area.

A parish council spokeswoman said: "We wish to make it perfectly clear that we are in no way supportive of this development and are currently taking steps to try to have this planning application called in by the Government Office for the North-East.

"We are also pressing, along with concerned local residents, for The Rookery to be given listed status."
