A STORAGE site that was once part of the European grain mountain has been taken over by a group of travellers.

The site at Clifton, on the outskirts of York, is on the market for redevelopment, but a group of travellers have moved a dozen caravans on to the site.

The site is owned by the Rural Payments Agency, which is in the process of trying to sell the land for an estimated £10m.

It features eight former Royal Air Force hangars which, until recently, were used as European intervention stores, but have stood empty for some months and are likely to be demolished.

Police have confirmed that they were called to the site after the travellers moved on and have spoken to the caravan owners.

A spokesman for the Government agency said: "We are aware that some travellers have gone on to the site and we are working together with our agents and legal advisors to get a court order to get them moved off.
