POLICE have declared a special high visibility operation involving 107 people to be a success.

Around 60 police officers were joined by British Transport Police, Ministry of Defence police and members of their partner agencies to patrol Ryedale from 7am to midnight on Tuesday.

Four people wanted for committing crimes outside the area were arrested, one man was arrested for an alleged assault in Wharram le Street, near Malton, four people from Hull were arrested in Malton and a number of items that had been stolen from local shops were recovered.

A local juvenile was detained on suspicion of theft and a man was arrested for alleged possession of drugs in Pickering. One man, who was wanted by police, handed himself in to Malton Police Station after being unnerved by the sight of the extra officers.

Sgt Cliff Eden from Malton Police said: "By using high visibility patrols, Ryedale has said no to crime, deterred crime and caught criminals. In essence, we have had s small amount of crime committed and the offenders were arrested on each occasion."
