FIREFIGHTERS in Bedale have been doing more than tackling blazes and rescuing people this year.

During the past 12 months, the town's 999 crews have raised a total of £4,000 for the Fire Services National Benevolent Fund.

The fund provides welfare support for serving and retired firefighters and their families in times of need. The cheque was presented to Deputy Chief Fire Officer Nigel Hutchinson by Sub Officer Ted Nicholson.

The money was raised through a series of events including car boot sales, donations from local residents and businesses and a quiz night, held at the Wagon and Horses, in the town.

The station has also enjoyed support from local rock group the Exploding Buddhas, who have played a number of concerts in aid of the fund.

"We would like to thank everybody who has contributed to the events," said Sub Officer Nicholson.
