TO the uninitiated, Filey is a quiet seaside resort, popular with tourists keen to enjoy a traditional British seaside holiday.

But to those in the know, it is a hot spot for UFO activity, with enthusiasts and experts from all over the country visiting to see if they, too, can spot flying saucers.

Now the North Yorkshire resort has been named as Britain's top location for sighting UFOs by the British UFO Hunters study group.

According to members, the town has had the most sightings of anywhere in the country this year.

A significantly large number of individual UFO sightings, plus a high volume of unusual aerial activity has been recorded on camcorders.

Experienced UFO investigator and Filey resident Russell Kellett said there were a number of factors that have led to the large number of sightings in the resort. "We have got a lot of dedicated UFO enthusiasts here and we have also got a very large expanse of clear sky," he said.

The British UFO Hunters is a network of UFO enthusiasts based all over the country. They keep in touch with each other and provide a point of contact for people who have sighted UFOs.

Chris Parr, founder and co-ordinator of the group, said they have carried out extensive research, using documentary evidence and video material of Filey. Members hold a skywatch every weekend in the Filey Brigg area in the hope of capturing paranormal activity.

He said that the town's status as a UFO hot spot was growing both in the local community and in UFO circles.

"It captures the interest of the local community so they are aware that UFO groups and UFO enthusiasts are there and are searching," he said.

"There just seems to be a massive interest and attraction to the Filey area. Filey is also a coastal town and these types of areas can be devoid of light pollution, which assists in a clear observation of the night sky. This increases the chances of a UFO sighting with quality and content.

"Local interest in UFO-related events can socially induce an area to be highly receptive to any unusual aerial phenomena."
