A POLICE firearms expert has warned parents to make sure their children stay on the right side of the law when they use air weapons.

PC Ged Haycroft, who is an armourer at Cleveland Police headquarters, said: "Times have changed and so has public attitude.

"High-profile incidents around the country involving criminal use of firearms have attracted much attention.

"Changes in legislation have resulted in the legitimate, law abiding, sporting shooter suffering as a result and the public are much quicker to respond and report sightings of a person with a gun."

He added that even if a teenager was reported to be carrying an air weapon or ball bearing gun the response would be the same - a confrontation with fully-armed police officers.

"Parents who want to nurture a child's wish to learn to shoot can still find specialist clubs," said PC Haycroft.

"Another course to follow is the Cadet Force where a youngster can learn about safety and self discipline under the instruction of trained instructors.

"But for those who wish to shoot on the confines of their own property should follow the airgun code."
