PERMISSION has been granted to convert council offices into houses despite objections from museum volunteers.

Richmondshire Museum used rooms at the back of the council offices in 33 Frenchgate, Richmond, for storage.

Volunteers said the space was vital for the future expansion of the museum.

But at a meeting on Tuesday, Richmondshire District Council approved its own application to allow the offices to be changed into housing.

The council is expected to sell the building to help fund its headquarters in Colburn.

The decision was taken despite concerns from Richmond and District Civic Society. In a letter to the council, allowing the museum to move into 33 Frenchgate was described as "a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity which should not be lost".
