PLANS to build nearly 250 homes in Stockton were approved yesterday despite health and safety concerns.

Eighty houses and 166 flats are expected to be built by Persimmon Homes in Parkfield Road, in central Stockton.

However, nearby businesses in the area have pointed to a scrapyard and busy main roads as potential hazards for children.

Ted Frater, of Parkfield Motors, argued that development would put at risk the development of businesses in the area and said there was a lack of on-site parking.

However, at a Stockton Borough Council planning committee meeting in Stockton Library yesterday, officers noted that no one had objected from the environmental health department or from the Highways Agency. The proposal was also in line with the Local Plan.

Councillors decided to accept the proposal as long as the builders paid for a school zone in Parkfield Road to help children get to school safely.
