A STRIKING self-portrait of a North-East teenager has been chosen to help attract travellers to an art exhibition.

It is part of a revealing and thought-provoking series of billboard posters put up throughout the Tyne and Wear Metro network.

The launch coincides with the national Channel 4 Self Portrait UK 14-19 touring exhibition, which is showing at Sunderland Museum and Winter Gardens until February 27.

Behind each image are individual stories, identities and cultures, capturing the ways today's teenagers see themselves and wish to be seen by others.

The portrait by 17-year-old Smaira Hussain, of Middlesbrough, gives an insight into the anxieties she experienced during her year 11 exams, expressing her fear and determination to overcome her feelings.

The campaign was designed to motivate and inspire teenagers to explore their changing cultures and identities through creative means, images, statements, and audio or video self-portraits.

Self-portraits by celebrities and well-known personalities supporting the campaign, including DJ Trevor Nelson, writer and poet Benjamin Zephaniah and principal ballerina Darcey Bussell, are included in the exhibition.

Sunderland Museum and Winter Gardens curator Juliet Horsley said: "The images, which provide a fascinating insight into teen-agers today, will provide interesting viewing for Metro passengers, and hopefully lead them to visit this wonderful exhibition."
