PUPILS will be making a splash with free swimming sessions funded by the police.

Officers from Hetton community policing team have pledged £500, matched by Hetton Sports Complex, to pay for swimming sessions for youngsters.

Pupils at primary schools in Hetton, Rainton, Houghton New Town and on the Racecourse estate, can win swimming tickets for themselves and their families through good behaviour.

Sergeant Dave Gordon said: "We want to show children that by working hard, demonstrating good behaviour, politeness to other pupils and teachers can result in their efforts being recognised with a free swim.

"This is part of Operation Gryphon, a long-term operation working with partners to tackle anti-social behaviour across Sunderland.

"This initiative with local schools and Hetton Sports Complex shows that good behaviour is valued."

The free tickets will be handed out by teachers over the next few weeks and can be used at the pool during the school holidays.
