A BRAVE youngster has picked up an award for showing great courage when she gave evidence during a murder trial.

The 12-year-old was praised for her maturity in difficult circumstances when she came forward with vital evidence that was crucial to securing a successful prosecution.

She was given her Good Citizenship Award by Cleveland Police Chief Constable Sean Price during a ceremony at the force's Ladgate Lane headquarters.

She said: "I was scared at first, but then I realised there was nothing to be scared of - I had done the right thing.

"At the end of the day, I did what I had to do. I was more nervous about receiving the award than giving evidence."

Her mother added: "I am so proud of her. She just told the truth and that is what we brought our children up to do."

Mr Price said: "What she did was a truly amazing thing. She showed courage beyond her years. I don't know the words to describe how brave she was to give evidence at the trial."

Also at the ceremony picking up a Chief Constable's Commendation were Special Constable David Nicholson and PC Mark Dias, for actions carried out during his first night on duty.

The pair tackled a drunken knife-wielding 18-year-old at a house in Stockton.

PC Dennis Lewis' bravery was recognised after he was stabbed with a hypodermic needle when he confronted an intruder at a neighbour's house while he was off duty.

The officer was stabbed twice in the face when he attempted to apprehend the man.

Other commendations went to officers working on Operation Warrior, which wiped out a drugs network in Stockton.

Six officers involved in Operation Epping, which targeted drug dealers in Hartlepool, were also commended for their actions.
