SWIMMERS are being warned that their local pool will be closed for more than two weeks for maintenance work.

Richmond swimming pool will close on Monday, March 7. The pool and the poolside will be re-tiled before the pool is re-opened on Friday, March 25.

Leisure contract manager Iain Garth said: "The existing tiles were laid when the pool originally opened in 1976.

"The pool and poolside will really benefit from the facelift, and the work is needed to ensure we comply with European health and safety guidelines.

"We have consulted with staff, clubs and disabled groups to ensure the end result is not only aesthetically pleasing but also satisfies users, such as those with a visual impairment."

Richmondshire District Council leader John Blackie said: "The town pool is a hugely important asset. We are investing £25,000 in the improvements, with a similar amount of money earmarked for the re-tiling of the changing area later in the year."

From April 1, management of the pool will be transferred from the district council to Richmondshire Leisure Trust, which will oversee the running and development of the district's sports and leisure assets.

The leisure trust will hold its celebrations on April 24.
