TWO teenage girls who attacked a stranger in a street with a knife and a broken bottle were jailed yesterday.

Masuk Uddin was set upon by the 16 and 17 year-olds as he walked through Salisbury Street, Sunderland, on November 10.

Newcastle Crown Court heard how Mr Uddin's face was slashed with the blade before he was attacked with the broken bottle.

Alec Burns, prosecuting, said the teenagers, who had both taken drink and drugs, shouted racist abuse at Mr Uddin, who has lived in Sunderland for 28 years.

Mr Uddin was taken to hospital.

The girls were arrested after they bragged to friends about what they had done.

Defence barristers said the pair were both full of remorse and that they came from troubled backgrounds.

Recorder Graham Reeds sentenced the 16-year-old, of previous good character, to ten months' detention.

The 17-year-old, who has 58 convictions for offences, including drugs, assault and attempted robbery, was sentenced to 18 months' detention.

Both pleaded guilty to racially aggravated unlawful wounding.
