TWO men face lengthy jail sentences after admitting causing the death of a child by their dangerous driving.

David Garner and Neil Sullivan were in a Honda Civic car which mounted the pavement and struck two-year-old Demi Schwec, causing severe head injuries.

The toddler died a week later in Middlesbrough's James Cook University Hospital following the accident in High Street, Loftus, east Cleveland, on September 9, last year.

Yesterday, Garner, 19, of Deepdale Road, Loftus, and Sullivan, 21, of Westfield Walk, also of Loftus, appeared at Teesside Crown Court, where they both pleaded guilty to charges of causing death by dangerous driving.

The case had earlier been moved to the Crown Court in order to accommodate friends and family of the dead girl in the public gallery.

Peter Makepeace, for Garner, said he had made full admissions to the offence as soon as he was interviewed.

He said: "He has never in any way sought to deny responsibility for what occurred and wants the case to be dealt with as soon as possible."

Eric Elliott, for Sullivan, said he was also anxious to have the proceedings speedily concluded in order to spare the families of the victim any more distress.

Judge Les Spittle granted the defendants bail and requested reports on them.

He said: "The most likely sentence is an immediate custodial sentence of an appropriate length."
