TRAINEE hairdresser Rachel Butterworth is hoping to cut it with the best in the country.

The 17-year-old has been nominated by her tutor at Darlington College of Technology for the Apprentice of the Year Award, run by the Learning and Skills Council.

Rachel, of Thornton Steward, near Leyburn, works at Headquarters hairdressing salon in Bedale, but has been taking NVQ hairdressing qualifications at Darlington College.

Her tutor, Hazel Atkinson, nominated her for the award, which could see her travelling to London for an award ceremony later in the year.

"I was really excited and surprised to be nominated," said Rachel, who has wanted to be a hairdresser since she was a child.

"It didn't really register at first, but now I've had time to think about it, I would really like to go to London."

Mrs Atkinson said: "Rachel shows real promise and has the right ability and attitude to go far in the business. We are all keeping our fingers crossed that she wins."

Rachel's boss, Sam Chisholm, said: "I can't wait for the final and with a bit of luck she will win. Rachel is very good. She is always cheerful, is happy to learn and join in. She is a great all-rounder."

If she does win, it will be the second time the salon has enjoyed success. Stylist Helen Cawood won the college's Hairdressing Student of the Year award last year.
