GOLFERS putting the public at risk with flying golf balls in parks and recreation grounds will soon be banned from their training sessions by a new bylaw.

Wayward golf balls have been putting walkers and park users in Harrogate at risk of injury.

Members of Harrogate Borough Council's general purposes committee unanimously recommended approval for the bylaw preventing unauthorised golf at the following areas: Belmont Park/Cat's Field, Starbeck; Butler Road Recreation Ground, Bilton; Irongates Sports Field, Harlow Moor and Killinghall Moor Football Fields, Jennyfields.

A council official said bylaws could only be introduced where the council had evidence of problems caused by golf balls.

Councillor Pat Jones (Stray), cabinet member for leisure, said police were being consulted about enforcement which would be helped by community officers and a park ranger.
