SPARKS were flying as a group of school pupils became among the first to take part in an inspirational science club.
Students at Easington Community School investigated the principles behind fireworks and explosions as part of a programme planned by the school and Sunderland University.
Activities included a forensic science investigation, a study of the east Durham coastal ecology and a visit to the Life Centre in Newcastle, during National Science week.
The pilot project was arranged with the help of teachers from five primary schools and Aimhigher.
Aimhigher project director Peter Phipps said: "This represents a marvellous opportunity for the young people to enjoy the thrills of real investigative science."
