DURING Terry McDermott's days at Liverpool he knew exactly what it was like to win silverware.

McDermott won the league title four times, the League Cup twice and the European Cup three times not to mention the PFA and Footballer Writers' Player of the Year awards in 1980 during his time at Anfield.

Now the legendary former Red and Magpies midfielder is back on Tyneside enjoying his second spell coaching at Newcastle and he is hoping to help the Geordies finally celebrate trophy success.

Despite his acclaimed list of honours in the game the FA Cup is something he has never been able to enjoy lifting - he was even in the losing Newcastle side that lost to Liverpool in 1974.

And he would love nothing more than to help Newcastle win the famous old trophy for the first time since 1955 this season having reached the quarter-finals of the competition, where they will face Tottenham a week tomorrow.

McDermott said: "I know what it means to the people of Tyneside to get a trophy. The first one is always the hardest.

"We are going well in two competitions and I remember the scenes when we won the old First Division with Newcastle (in 1993) and the place came to a standstill. God only knows what it would be like if we won the FA or UEFA Cup.

"It's not just about cups there's still lots of points to play for in the Premiership and we haven't given up on a top six finish. It's a tall order and not out of the question. We still have Middlesbrough to play at home so we can close the gap and we aim to keep this run going. Hopefully we can bring silverware to the club."

During eight years, between 1974 and '82, McDermott scored 80 goals in 328 appearances for Liverpool and will always remember that period of his life with special fondness.

But either side of that period he racked up a total of 168 games for Newcastle, scoring 24 goals, so he always looks forward to the two clubs going head-to-head.

And, now that he is back on the coaching staff at Newcastle alongside another ex-Red in Souness, Kirby-born McDermott said: "My heart's in Newcastle. Games between the two have always been special. I'm obviously from there and had my best years there while playing.

"I have a lot of memories but my heart is in Newcastle and it has been for a long time. It's always nice to face Liverpool but there's only one team I want to get the points.
