A NORTH-EAST teacher has won an award for her work with the Girl Guides.

Jenny Snow, a teacher at Heathfield Primary School, in Darlington, has achieved a Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award.

She was presented with the award in London.

The award is given for activities that people can do in their spare time, and is for people aged 14 to 25.

There are three levels -bronze, silver and gold.

A gold award takes at least 18 months to achieve, and most people begin on the bronze level.

Ms Snow said: "You do not have to start on bronze, you can go straight on to gold, which is what I did."

She has only recently begun teaching and gained the award through her Girl Guides group. She said: "I am delighted to achieve it, it really enhances your options.
