A NORTH teacher training scheme is being launched.

The one-year course, starting in County Durham in September, will be the first of its kind in the country.

Backed by 30 schools, the course will train a new type of teacher to bring the world of work alive for teenagers.

Organisers are seeking people with experience in art and design, technology, science, health, social care, leisure and tourism.

Candidates need a degree and at least a Grade C in maths and English GCSE.

They will be able to achieve qualified teacher status and a post-graduate certificate in education from Durham University. Until now, people from business or the public sector have been unable to take such a course.

Training will take place at the Digital Factory, in Newton Aycliffe.

Durham Secondary Applied School Centred Initial Teacher Training, which runs the scheme, will hold an open afternoon for potential applicants at Durham Johnston School Upper Site, Crossgate Moor, from 4pm to 6pm on Thursday, March 17.

Details are available on www.durhamscitt.org or from course director Kate Dalton, at Woodham Community Technology College, Newton Aycliffe, on (01325) 300328 extension 213.
