MEDICAL experts have been called in to a North-East young offenders' institution following an outbreak of mumps.
Two prisoners at the Castington institute, near Morpeth, in Northumberland, came down with the virus last week and are being treated in the prison.
A Home Office spokesperson said: "We are working with the Health Protection Agency to control the situation and, following their advice, everything else is running as normal."
The movement of prisoners, including court appearances, was restricted over the weekend and yesterday but are now back to normal.
Two teenage boys due to appear at South Durham Youth Court, Newton Aycliffe, yesterday will return at later dates.
A 17-year-old accused of rape and assault occasioning actual bodily harm will now appear before magistrates on March 14.
And a 17-year-old, who faces ten charges relating to indecent images of children, is due back in court on March 21
