HOUSING charity Norcare has been voted one of Britain's best employers.

The Newcastle organisation was ranked 33rd in the The Sunday Times 100 Best Small Companies to Work For list.

The group has 76 staff and a pool of volunteers. Eighty per cent of staff said they were proud of the company, and felt they made a difference to it. Eighty-four per cent said it was run on strong principles and 86 per cent believed it made a positive difference to the world.

The rankings were based on the responses of nearly 13,000 employees, who answered 66 questions covering areas such as personal growth, well being, and how they felt towards their immediate boss, their colleagues and the company generally.

It follows the success of social enterprise company Eaga, also based in Newcastle, which was ranked at number 38 in the Sunday Times Best Companies to Work For index.

Comparing the surveys showed that workers at small to medium-sized enterprises were happier than their counterparts at larger companies.

The Sunday Times 100 Best Small Companies to Work For, now in its second year, was open to companies with between 50 and 249 employees.
