People living in Darlington are setting up a group aimed at spreading the healthy eating message.

A luncheon club is being formed by people living in the Bank Top area of the town, following the success of an eating initiative called Hands on Health.

Darlington Primary Care Trust has been working closely on the project with Durham Rural Community Council (DRCC) to promote healthy eating in the town.

They have been running cookery courses at Darlington Borough Council's Wesley Court housing scheme, showing how to cook healthy food on a budget.

Fourteen people turned up for the latest event and cooked a three-course meal for less than £10.

They have also taken a course at Darlington College of Technology to qualify in basic food hygiene and are planning to launch their own regular healthy eating luncheon club.

DRCC project co-ordinator Mo Dobbie said: "The ladies spent the morning preparing a tasty meal and then sat down together to eat it. People on the course are now taking into the community what they have learned, which is great."
