A COUNCIL is claiming success in the first stage of a consultation on the future of Billingham town centre.
Stockton Borough Council said hundreds of residents had given their views on £24m plans to refurbish The Forum shopping and leisure complex.
Researchers have been in Billingham town centre asking opinions on the proposed development. About 80 people, many representing community groups, attended a consultation event last week.
Councillor Bob Cook, the council's cabinet member for regeneration and development, said: "I am delighted we've had a response from so many people and there are emerging a number of common issues - the general environment of the town centre, the toilets and the range of shops and there is still another week of the first stage of consultation."
The survey is available on Stockton Council's website at www.stockton.gov.uk and people have until March 11 to complete and return it.
A previous plan to redesign Billingham centre was ditched after The Forum Theatre, which is part of the complex, became a listed building. Protestors collected 7,500 signatures opposing the demolition of the theatre complex.
Youngsters from Youth Viewpoint and Billingham User Group have also been involved in the consultation. One child submitted a drawing of what he wanted to see in the town centre.
Coun Cook said: "Their suggestions, along with all the others, will be given to the developers, Halladale, for them to work into any early designs."
