MEMORIES of the Second World War are being sought for a project that will see them preserved for ever.

People from across North Yorkshire who were in the forces, worked to the Home Front or lived through the war years are being asked to record their recollections.

North Yorkshire County Council is taking part in the BBC's People's War project and all the memories will be made available on the project's dedicated website.

From Monday, the county record office in Northallerton is holding a five-day event including an exhibition of archive material.

Geoff Moore, author of the book Thirsk at War, will give a talk and films from the BBC People's War project and the Yorkshire Film Archive will be shown on Thursday, March 17. The films start at 6.30pm with the talk at 7.30pm.

County councillor Carl Les said: "Unfortunately there are fewer and fewer people around who have personal memories of those days.

"It is important that we have a permanent record so that future generations have a proper appreciation of what those days were really like to live through."
