MORE than half of babies born in York are being registered at a supermarket, according to new figures.
City of York Council was the first in the UK to offer a satellite registration service at its Asda store.
The service has proved so popular that more than 50 per cent of baby registrations in York took place there last year.
Superintendent registrar Robert Livesey said he was not surprised by the figures. "By November 2003 about a third of York babies were registered at the Asda site," he said.
"For 2004, this figure has increased to over half.
"We had an abundant year for newborns and over 1,600 of them were registered at the supermarket. It makes a lot of sense for new mums and dads."
