A DIVING gear specialist is about to launch a new system that can help divers stay underwater for longer and at greater depths.

Delta P Technology, in Gateshead, has created the Rebreather, a computer-monitored device that reclaims oxygen from a diver's breath. This can be re-used, giving them more time below the surface.

Kevin Gurr, a partner in the company and a keen diver, came up with the idea after exploring the wreck of the Titanic's sister ship, the Britannic.

"On dives like that, the time you have in the water, and the depths you can go without fear of anything going wrong, is crucial," he said.

"I wanted to develop a system which would give people a longer and safer dive."

Test dives have been carried out to 130 metres, but the finished product will work at up to 200m and be up to ten times as efficient as traditional diving gear.

The company specialises in adding computer technology to diving equipment and has a £1m turnover.

Business partner Gary Sharp said: "This has been in development for five years and is ready to launch now.

"We are aiming for the high-end market, such as diving instructors and deep divers, but it also has applications for the military market."

The company, which has offices on the Team Valley Estate, was awarded £77,000 by the Small Business Service.
