PUPILS have been getting a taste of the construction industry by taking part in a design competition.
Teams from Branksome Comprehensive School won the first and second prizes in the Enterprise in Construction Challenge organised by Darlington College of Technology.
The annual competition brings together the college, the Construction Industry Training Board, the Darlington Curriculum Centre and local employers.
Teams from Branksome, Hummersknott School and Languages College and Carmel RC Technology College took part.
They were asked to design a three-quarter acre community area at the new West Park development, Faverdale.
The winning Branksome team came up with a three-storey leisure centre, featuring shops and apartments, an outdoor play area, poetry wall, pond and a brick train sculpture.
Runners-up were an all-girls team, also from Branksome, which meant the school walked away with prize money totalling £700.
"We will now ask everyone at the school how they think the money should be spent," said winning pupil Rachael Patan.
