FOUR teenagers have been arrested after reports of a gang fight in Peterlee town centre.

It is thought some of those fighting were armed with sticks or bats. Although no one was seriously hurt, a number of windows and a parked car were damaged.

Officers were called to the fracas in Oakerside Drive at around 8pm on Saturday.

Four or five youths were in each group, with a number of others in the area at the same time, possibly as onlookers.

It is believed that the fight may have stemmed from a similar but less violent incident, possibly involving the same two gangs, earlier that afternoon in the town's Cotswold Place.

On Sunday police arrested four youths, all local and aged between 15 and 17.

They were arrested on suspicion of violent disorder, questioned and then released on police bail pending further inquiries. Police say footage from security cameras is being studied and more arrests are likely.

Officers are appealing for witnesses to either disturbance to ring 0845 606 0365 and ask for the investigating officers at Peterlee, PC Jonathan Keenan or PC Paul Hyde.
